Fellowship

Through fellowship, individuals build strong relationships, encouraging one another in their faith and sharing in both joys and challenges. It creates an environment where believers can engage in collective worship, prayer, and service, strengthening their commitment to Christian principles and enhancing the church’s mission.

Discipleship

Through discipleship, members are equipped with a deeper understanding of Scripture, enabling them to live out their faith in daily life and to evangelize effectively. It involves mentoring, education, and accountability, fostering spiritual maturity and a strong foundation in Christian doctrine.

Evangelism

Evangelism encourages personal growth and boldness in faith as members engage with diverse communities and cultures. By prioritizing evangelism, the church expands its reach, welcoming new believers into the community, and fulfilling its role in God’s redemptive plan for humanity.

Worship

Through worship, individuals and the congregation collectively acknowledge God’s sovereignty, grace, and holiness, fostering a deeper spiritual connection and personal relationship with Him. Worship unifies the church community, creating a shared experience of faith and devotion that strengthens communal bonds and encourages mutual edification.

CHURCH HISTORY

The New Hope Missionary Baptist Church was organized around 1800 under a brush harbor as most black churches during that time.  The first church was constructed in 1884under the leadership of Pastor Lewis Calvary.

Among the first Deacons/Trustees were J. H Shepherd, Julius White, Peter White, Jack Gantt, George Long and Mack Shepherd.  The first Sunday School Superintendent was Henry Tolton.  The first reported organized choir was a junior choir under the leadership of Reverend Isaiah Harris in 1949. During the history of the church, other auxiliaries were established under the leadership of other pastors.

The church was located on the Washington Ferry Road near the entrance of Maxwell Air Force Base in an area known as “Hookers.”  Many converts were baptized in the lake at Hookers and in the gravel pit.  Maxwell purchased the property in that area and forced New Hope to relocate beyond the fence of Maxwell on Washington Ferry Road.  In 1889 after the relocation of the church, some of the membership split from New Hope and formed the Canaan Hill Baptist Church located on Air Base Boulevard.

As more of the known Hunter Station residents moved closer to Highway 31 (Birmingham Highway), the church was moved to the fork of the roads of Washington Ferry Road and Highway 31.  In the early 50’s when the state expanded Highway 31 from two lanes to four lanes, the church was located back off the highway to its present location.  The addition of an education department, fellowship area and kitchen were done.  During the early 60’s the building was upgraded with the installation of central air and heating.

Under the leadership of Pastor Lawrence Howard, the vision to build a new sanctuary was formulated.  The vision became a reality under the leadership of Reverend Clarence E. Varner.  The congregation marched into its new edifice in June 2002.  The old church building served as the fellowship hall until God blessed us with a new fellowship hall.  That building was also constructed under the leadership of Reverend Varner.

Reverend Varner resigned as Pastor in January 2020.   In December 2021, the members voted current pastor, Reverend Marcus B. Hunter in as the leader.  His vision statement being, “Making Effective Disciples” Matthew 4:19.

Many have served and dedicated themselves to the continuation of our church.  We praise and thank God for the GREAT things he has done, is doing and will continue to do for us here at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
